Maple “Ebonized” Vase IV

Maple “Ebonized” Vase IV
Hand turned and finished vase crafted from maple and finished with an eco-friendly matte oil. This vase is a solid piece and for dried flowers only, it is not watertight.
Ebonizing is the process of darkening wood with a solution of steel wool and vinegar. When applied it reacts with the tannins in the wood and creates a dark and rick black color. ***All that to say, this piece is not ebonized! Maple is not high in tannins and therefore does not ebonize well. But, I was still looking for a way to apply the same ceramic glazing techniques to maple. So I used the exact same technique, but a different solution. Instead of using an ebonizing solution, I used an eco-friendly matte oil with a hint of white pigment to create the lines. Each piece is one-of-a-kind with every line being hand applied and the color & design varying based on the wood grain.
